This will be my last entry until I am hooked up again in Langley, but please leave me a comment, send me an email, or just say hi on my tag board. I'll be checking in from time to time on my way across the country. I'm a bit excited about this driving trip. Last summer we drove east, from here to Prince Edward Island. My favourite part of the drive was the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River, in Quebec. The highway ran right along the river, with views of beautiful rolling farms, climbing up from the river banks. Very picturesque. Now I will be driving west to the other coast of the province, so within the space of 1 year I will have almost traversed the country (laterally - there's still so much more to see up north). People keep telling me how bored I'll be driving through Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, but give me miles of waving grain with those lovely green rolling valleys (especially in Saskatchewan) any day. (They have a special name, those valleys - anyone remember what they're called?) And that sky. I wish I could describe the sky. It's endless, and seems to go so much higher over the prairies than it does here. Big cumulus clouds just billow up forever. I love the prairies.

In fact, I'm a bit shocked that I'm even moving into the mountains. I used to joke (when I lived in Saskatoon) that "The mountains are nice enough, but they block the view." I expected to move back to the pariries before I'd move into the mountains. And I never really expected to move back to the prairies. But I'm so glad I'm being given the opportunity to see them again. And the mountains. Who can resist seeing the mountains off in the distance everywhere you go in town? Drive towards Langley City, and I can even see Mount Baker in Washington state, off in the distance. Snow-capped all year 'round. It's lovely, and I'll get to see it on my way to Home Depot or the grocery store.

Anyway, I'm waxing a bit rhapsodic here - must be that second glass of wine. Join me in mid-August for the Ribby Cardie knit-along, courtesy of Alison. I won't be reporting in, but it will be my hotel knitting for the trip. I'll be stopping in Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Stettler (to say hello to my Gramma), Calgary, Kelowna (my first visit to the BC interior), and then Langley. So if you're in any of those places, think of me. Now I'll just leave you with a place to say hello, and hope to hear from some of you over the next few weeks.

Hey, look what I did -

almost a pair

I started the first sock at Christmas - 6 months for the first sock, 1 week for the second. I decided even if I couldn't take my knitting on the plane, I might want to knit while in BC, so I found a cast off (here) for the top of my first sock, worked the toe of the second, and packed them into my suitcase. I wan't particularly thrilled with knitting socks when I did the first one, but figured it was a small project that I could stuff in my bag, and if I didn't knit, so what. Apparently I just needed to get used to those tiny needles - I kept going, around and around, knitting and chatting, paying little attention, and next thing I know, I'm about 6 rounds from the ribbing. It's Wendy's Toe-Up pattern, by the way.

I must go and find more sock yarn - there's a store in town where I can get Regia yarns for cheap (about $2.00 less per ball than regular price, plus I get a discount for my guild membership). I'll have to stock up before I move.

Did I mention the yarn store in my area in Langley? It's a yarn store/cafe (seems everything in BC has a coffee shop attached to it) with a friendly owner, and a decent selection of yarns, books, and needles. We checked it out over the weekend while we were there. No more driving to the next town to be ignored at the Snotty Yarn Store. I'm a happy girl.

Altogether a very successful party. Here's the best photo of the birthday girl:

Maggie loves new sunglasses

Okay, the first deal went south, but we found another house and all is well. The first sale seemed like it was set to go, but the couple that owned the house wanted to put a clause into the offer that they would only accept it if the house they had just put an offer on was purchased (condition on that purchase was an inspection). Their real estate agent believed there'd be no problem, so our real estate agent said no problem, so we accepted their condition. Well, needless to say, after we'd called everyone and emailed photos, their inspection bombed. So the sellers backed out of our deal, and we were back at square one.

Our new houseWe started again on Monday morning, and were feeling rather discouraged until we looked at this house. Nice floor plan, only 4 years old, big enough yard, within our price range. We jumped. This time, there were no weird sellers' conditions and the deal went through without a hitch. The inspection was a rave, and we've bought the house. We close in late August. We even got the closing date we wanted - about a week before school starts, so we'll have a chance to get the girls settled in before they have to start at a new school. Yay!

We got home last night, and this afternoon is Maggie's birthday party. I've been scrambling all day to get ready. Tomorrow we start packing - less than three weeks until the movers come. Anyone have any boxes?

Amy loved the disposable cameras Amy was looking for equal time here - it seems I have posted more photos from the wedding of Maggie than of Amy. So in the spirit of fair play, here she is. Isn't she beautiful?

Every table at the wedding had a disposable camera. Amy thought this was best part of the reception, I think. She took photos of everything around the hall, including many of the bride and groom. This may not have been quite what they were after, but to her, they were the most fascinating thing there.

I seem to be spending a lot of time these days at the Realty Link website. It's an excellent web page for real estate in BC. If you're planning a move out there, by all means check it out. Meanwhile, we have a real estate agent, and we're heading back out west on Wednesday to go buy a house. So it'll pretty quiet around here again for a while. But check back on the 22nd for (hopefully) some good news about our new house. I'll try to remember to take my camera with me this time, so I can show off a bit of where I'll be living.

We suddenly have an awful lot to do, and only about 30 days to get it all done. I've posted a moving to-do list, which I expect to grow a bit more before it starts shrinking. There's more to do than what's there, but we've kind of split up the tasks. Tim's handling things like gas and hydro, I'm handling things more family related, and we're each handling whatever is our own personal business. Meanwhile, I'm already coming up with things that I could be packing right now - the good china for example, will not likely be used between now and August 11.

Oh, this is a knitting blog, right? Okay, I've been knitting the lipstick sweater. It's tough to motivate myself for what is essentially a third sleeve, since I ripped out my first one because of the increase rate. And I was looking forward to a week in the passenger seat, knitting my way across the country, but it looks like we'll be taking both cars at once, convoy style, so I'll be in the driver's seat. And again no knitting on the airplane. Darn Air Canada will not allow knitting needles on board. They're expressly forbidden in carry-on baggage.

It seems I've sold my house. Well, almost. There is a condition - a technicality really, comes from living in a condo, but other than that, it's sold. I'm homeless as of August 12. We'll be flying back to Vancouver to buy a house next week. Don't you love frequent flyer points? I don't think we could do this move without them.

Hmm, I'm being called to start making popcorn already - movie night, you know. It's Pee Wee's Big Adventure tonight. Amy's request. Gotta go!

Zowie, someone's put a bid on my house!

Wow, it's been a while. Just after that last entry, I listed my house. Which meant a marathon cleaning and decluttering session to get it ready to show. Plus we were going away to Vancouver to look around and see where we'd like to live. It was a very busy few days. Then another very busy few days in Vancouver. Then home and straight back to work. Our house looks lovely - apparently there has been plenty of interest and people are already inquiring about terms on offers. We start accepting offers today. (We both had to be available, as the house in is both our names.)

Meanwhile, we really like Langley, BC, and I expect that's where we'll end up. We'll have to go back in a week or two to actually buy a house. This trip was sort of a fact-finding mission. What areas do we like, and equally important, what areas can we afford? Happily, Langley answers both questions. And, very cool, we have friends from years back who now live there.

I have been enjoying reading Life of Pi. I joined the KnitBloggers Reading Group. Like many who've signed up, I've wanted to join a reading group for some time, but it's hard to find one, and then, with a husband who travels, it's hard to go to meetings. Virtual meetings, perfect!

Finally, precious little knitting has been accomplished lately. Air Canada will not allow knitting needles on board, and I didn't have room to pack anything, so I went without for the weekend. I did a bit on my Shapely Tank on Tuesday night while watching Moulin Rouge (again). I started working on Maggie's lipstick pink sweater, but Moulin Rouge is such a visual spectacle of a movie, I had to put the cables down in favour of the tank - I can knit plain stockinette pretty much without looking. Still no pictures, but really, it's beige stockinette, what's to see? I'll get it in front of the camera one of these days.

Maggie and GrampyThat pretty much sums up my last two weeks. Not thrilling reading, but there you have it. Oh, want another wedding photo? Okay, here's Maggie and Grampy on the dance floor.
